Regulation

Register Of Practitioners

There is a register of practitioners, held by the CNHC (Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council). Anyone on this register will:-

  • have trained to certain agreed standards
  • abide by a professional code of ethics
  • be fully insured
  • undertake regular professional training

The CNHC also deals with complaints, advertising standards and publicity, not just for the Alexander Technique but for a whole range of alternative therapies.

No Legal Requirements

Why have a register at all? Because anyone can call themselves an Alexander Technique teacher. Legally. No experience, training or qualifications are required.

Most reputable teachers are fully trained, and belong to one of the main Alexander Technique organisations (see below). However, the CNHC register provides an independent, formal layer of security and protection.

Main Organisations:

ITM    – Interactive Teaching Method of the Alexander Technique(*)
STAT – Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique
PAAT – Professional Association of Alexander Teachers
ATI     – Alexander Technique International

(*) Karen is a fully-qualified member of the ITM, and on the CNHC register.

Regulation

CNHC is the UK regulator for complementary healthcare practitioners

The Department of Health has recommended that, where CNHC registers the professional discipline in question, you consult with someone who is CNHC registered.
